U.S. Department of Transportation

The Department of Transportation was established by an act of Congress on October 15, 1966. The Department’s first official day of operation was April 1, 1967.

      The Freight Analysis Framework (FAF), produced through a partnership between BTS and FHWA, integrates data from a variety of sources to create a comprehensive picture of freight movement among states and major metropolitan areas by all modes of transportation. Starting with data from the 2012 Commodity Flow Survey (CFS) and international trade data from the Census Bureau, FAF incorporates data from agriculture, extraction, utility, construction, service, and other sectors. FAF version 4 (FAF4.1.1) provides estimates for tonnage, value, and ton-miles by regions of origin and destination, commodity type, and mode. Data are available for the base year of 2012, the recent years of 2013-2016, and forecasts from 2020 through 2045 in 5-year intervals.

      Numbers may not add to totals due to rounding. The 2019 data are provisional estimates that are based on selected modal and economic trend data. All truck, rail, water, and pipeline movements that involve more than one mode, including exports and imports that change mode at international gateways, are included in multiple modes & mail to avoid double counting. As a consequence, rail and water totals in this table are less than those reported in other published sources.
