      Annual data on quantities for crude oil, oil products, natural gas and manufactures gases, electricity and derived heat, solid fossil fuels,  renewables and wastes covering the full spectrum of the energy sector from supply through transformation to final energy consumption by sector and fuel type. Also, annual imports and exports data of various energy carriers by country of origin and destination, as well as infrastructure information. Annual data collection cover in principle the EU Member States, EFTA, EU candidate countries, and potential candidate countries. Time series starts mostly in year 1990. All data are presented in the form of energy balances.

      Short-term statistics (STS) give information on a wide range of economic activities according to NACE Rev.2 classification (Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community). The industrial import price indices offer information according to the CPA classification (Statistical Classification of Products by Activity in the European Economic Community). Construction indices are broken down by Classification of Types of Construction (CC). All data under this heading are index data. Percentage changes are also available for each indicator. The index data are generally presented in the following forms:UnadjustedCalendar adjustedSeasonally adjusted Depending on the STS regulation data are accessible as monthly, quarterly and annual data. This heading covers the indicators listed below in four different sectors. Based on the national data, Eurostat compiles EU and euro area infra-annual economic statistics. Among these, a list of indicators, called Principal European Economic Indicators (PEEIs) has been identified by key users as being of prime importance for the conduct of monetary and economic policy of the euro area. These indicators are mainly released through Eurostat's website under the heading Euro-indicators. There are eight PEEIs contributed by STS and they are marked with * in the text below.       This consumption stands for final energy consumption. This means that the consumption in industry covers all industrial sectors with the exception of the energy sector, like power stations, oil refineries, coke ovens and all other installations transforming energy products into another form. Final energy consumption in transport covers mainly the consumption by railways and electrified urban transport systems. Final energy consumption in households/services covers quantities consumed by private households, small-scale industry, crafts, commerce, administrative bodies, services with the exception of transportation, agriculture and fishing.

      The indicator is the ratio between the Gross Inland Consumption of Energy and the Gross Domestic Product calculated for a calendar year. It measures the energy consumption of an economy and its overall energy efficiency.The Gross Inland Consumption of Energy is calculated as the sum of the Gross Inland Consumption of the five types of energy: coal, electricity, oil, natural gas and renewable energy sources. In addition, each of these figures is calculated as an aggregation of different data on production, storage, trade (imports/exports) and consumption/use of energy.The GDP figures are taken at chain-linked volumes, reference year 2005 (at 2005 exchange rates).The energy intensity ratio is the result of dividing the Gross Inland Consumption by the GDP. Since Gross Inland Consumption is measured in kgoe (kilogram of oil equivalent) and GDP in 1000 EUR, this ratio is measured in kgoe per 1000 EUR.All necessary data related to energy data is compiled through five annual Joint Questionnaires (one for each type of energy above-mentioned). These questionnaires are called «joint» because they are shared by Eurostat and the International Energy Agency (organisation that belongs to the OECD).       Imports are recorded by country of origin, exports by country of destination; quantities are regarded as imported or exported when they have crossed the political boundaries of the country, whether customs clearance has taken place or not.  The concept of the physical movement of flows applies. The monthly imports and exports data collections cover following energy commodities: solid  fuels (hard coal only)oil and petroleum productsgaselectricity      For solid fuels, crude oil and NGLs, imports and exports are reported by country of ultimate origin, respectively destination, while natural gas, refinery products and feedstocks as well as electricity are reported as coming from the country of last consignment. Quantities of crude oil and petroleum products imported or exported under processing agreements (i.e. refining on account) should be included. However, transit trade, international marine and aviation bunkers are excluded from this data set. Please note that this is different from the definition of natural gas trade in the annual gas questionnaire and from the definition in the previous monthly oil and gas questionnaire (before January 2013). For further information, please consult the Energy Statistics Regulation (Regulation (EC) 1099/2008 on energy statistics) and the reporting instructions. It is the sum of final energy consumption in industry, transport, households, services, agriculture, etc. Final energy consumption in industry covers the consumption in all industrial sectors with the exception of the ´Energy sector´. The fuel quantities transformed in the electrical power stations of industrial autoproducers and the quantities of coke transformed into blast-furnace gas are not part of the overall industrial consumption but of the transformation sector. Final energy consumption in transport covers the consumption in all types of transportation, i.e., rail, road, air transport and inland navigation. Final energy consumption in households, services, etc. covers quantities consumed by private households, commerce, public administration, services, agriculture and fisheries. The indicator is a Sustainable Development Indicator (SDI).       Final energy consumption in households: The indicator measures the final residential energy consumption (total consumption) expressed in 1000 tonnes of oil equivalent. It aims to identify trends in energy consumption in households, as these trends are addressed by various policies of the European Union. The target is to reduce the total energy consumption by improving the energy efficiency (of residential buildings and electric appliances in residential buildings).  This data are extracted from the data set for quantitative energy statistics (Eurostat navigation tree > Database by themes > Environment and energy > Energy > nrg_quant > nrg_10 > nrg_100a).   Final energy consumption in households by fuel: This indicator presents the share of six fuel types to the final residential energy consumption: solid fuels, total petroleum fuels, gas, electrical energy, derived heat and renewable energies. The share of each fuel is expressed in per cent of the total consumption. Both indicators are resource efficiency indicators (t2020_rk200, t2020_rk210). They are included in the Resource Efficiency Scoreboard for the assessment of progress towards the objectives and targets of the Europe 2020 flagship initiative on Resource Efficiency. The two indicators have been chosen as proxies for indicators in the key area 'Improving buildings' of the resource efficiency initiative. This area focuses on the energy spent in households for heating purposes and how the amelioration of buildings can contribute to energy-saving plans. Eurostat collects data on total energy consumption in households split by fuel category.       Enerdata is an independent Research & Consulting firm on the global oil, gas, coal, power, renewable and carbon markets established in 1991. Total energy consumption - for each energy product it is the sum of primary production, external trade, marine bunkers (fuel used by boats and aircraft for international transport) and stock variations. For the world, marine bunkers are included. This induces a gap with the sum of regions. Total primary production evaluates the quantity of natural energy resources. Total balance of trade is the difference between exports and imports. The balance of a net exporter appears as a negative value (-). The balance of geographic and geopolitical zones is simply the sum of the trade balance of all the countries. The energy intensity is calculated by dividing the total energy consumption of a country by its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It measures the total amount of energy necessary to generate one unit of GDP. GDP is expressed at constant exchange rate and purchasing power parity to remove the impact of inflation and reflect differences in general price levels and relate energy consumption to the real level of economic activity. Using purchasing power parity rates for GDP instead of exchange rates increases the value of GDP in regions with a low cost of living, and therefore decreases their energy intensities. Total energy includes coal, gas, oil, electricity, heat and biomass.   There are 43 Annex I countries including the European Union.

      IEA member countries’ closing oil stock levels in days of net imports monthly data. Each IEA member country, excluding net exporters (Canada, Denmark and Norway), has an obligation to have oil stock levels that equate to no less than 90 days of net imports. The IEA minimum stockholding obligation is based on net imports of all oil, including both primary products (such as crude oil, natural gas liquids [NGLs]) and refined products. It does not cover naphtha and volumes of oil used for international marine bunkers. The 90-day commitment of each IEA member country is based on average daily net imports of the previous calendar year. This commitment can be met through both stocks held exclusively for emergency purposes and stocks held for commercial or operational use, including stocks held at refineries, at port facilities, and in tankers in ports. The obligation specifies several types of stocks that cannot be counted toward the commitment, including military stocks, volumes in tankers at sea, in pipelines or at service stations, or amounts held by end-consumers (tertiary stocks). It also does not include crude oil not yet produced. Member countries can arrange to store oil outside of their national boundaries and include such stocks in meeting their minimum requirement. This option is particularly important for countries in which storage capacity constraints or supply logistics make domestic storage insufficient. To exercise this option and count the stocks held abroad toward the obligation, the governments involved must have bilateral agreements assuring unconditional access to the stocks in an emergency. When evaluating a country's compliance with the 90-day obligation, the IEA applies a 10% deduction to its total stocks, net any oil held under bilateral agreements. This accounts for any volumes that are technically unavailable (such as tank bottoms).

Energy tax revenues are measured in euro 2010 (deflated with the gross market produck implicit deflator) and the final energy consumption in TOE (tonnes of oil equivalent), therefore the ITR on energy is measured in EUR per TOE.  This is a Sustainable Development Indicator (SDI).       These are data collected via the annual electricity and heat questionnaire.       The JODI-Gas World Database is a platform that provides access to all data reported through monthly submissions of the JODI-Gas Questionnaire by all participating countries and economies. The database is updated on a monthly basis around the 20th of each month, though there are possibilities for additional updates. Registered users are notified by e-mail alert each time the database is updated. Modelled after JODI-Oil, which features monthly oil production, consumption, stocks and trade data from over 90 countries, JODI-Gas embodies the same objective of enhancing energy data transparency, with the ultimate goal of ensuring global energy security for producers and consumers alike.       The OPEC Annual Statistical Bulletin (ASB) provides detailed and comprehensive time-series data on many different aspects of the global petroleum industry, including production, demand, imports and exports, as well as exploration, production and transportation activities. The publication contains, in particular, key statistical data on oil and natural gas activities in each of OPEC’s 12 Member Countries: Algeria, Angola, Ecuador, Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela. Additionally, it provides valuable industry data for various countries with detailed classifications mainly by geographical region, and covers the major economic areas around the world. This year’s OPEC Annual Statistical Bulletin (ASB), which is comprised of data up to the end of 2016, reveals the following important facts:In 2016, world crude oil production inched up by 0.35m b/d or 0.5 per cent as compared to 2015, to reach 75.48m b/d, marking a seventh consecutive year of growth. The majority of non-OPEC countries registered substantial declines in their 2016 average crude production, as compared to 2015. The biggest declines were for the United States, –0.54m b/d or –5.7 per cent and China, –0.31m b/d or –7.2 per cent. In 2016, the top three crude oil producing countries were Saudi Arabia (10.46m b/d), Russia (10.29m b/d) and the United States (8.88m b/d).World oil demand averaged at 95.12m b/d in 2016, up by 1.5 per cent year-on-year, with the largest increases in Asia and Pacific, particularly China and India, Western Europe, North America and Africa. 2016 oil demand in the Middle East remained flat year-on-year, while oil demand declined in Latin America for the second year in a row. Total OECD oil demand grew solidly for the second consecutive year in 2016, while oil demand in OPEC Member Countries declined for the first time since 1999, dropping by 0.20m b/d or 2.2 per cent, as compared to 2015, mainly as a result of declining oil demand in Venezuela, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia and IR Iran. Distillates and gasoline account for around 56 per cent of 2016 total world oil demand and are on increasing trends. Residual fuel oil requirements share in 2016 total oil demand amounts roughly to seven per cent, with requirements marking yearly gains for the first time since 2004. Gasoline dominates 2016 oil demand growth in Asia and Pacific and North America, while distillates are robust in Western and Eastern Europe. The 2016 OPEC Member Countries’ demand remained robust only in relation to residual fuel and declined for all other main petroleum categories, notably gasoline and distillates.Total exports of crude oil of OPEC Member Countries stood at 25.01m b/d in 2016 from 23.49m b/d in 2015. This increase represents a 6.5 per cent growth on a year-on-year basis. As in previous years, the bulk of crude oil from OPEC Members was exported to the Asia and Pacific region, 15.72m b/d or 62.9 per cent. Significant volumes of crude oil were also exported to North America, which increased its imports from OPEC Members from 2.81m b/d in 2015 to 3.29m b/d in 2016. Europe imported 4.21m b/d of crude oil from OPEC Members, 2.5 per cent less as compared to 2015 volumes. OPEC Members’ exports of petroleum products averaged 5.29m b/d during 2016, up by 0.90m b/d or 20.5 per cent as compared to 2015. OPEC Members’ imports of petroleum products stood at 2.06m b/d in 2016, roughly 0.15m b/d, or 6.7 per cent lower than in 2015.Total world proven crude oil reserves stood at 1,492bn b at the end of 2016, increasing slightly by 0.3 per cent from the previous year’s level of 1,488bn b. The largest additions came from Iraq, Venezuela and Norway. Total OPEC Members’ proven crude oil reserves increased 0.5 per cent to 1,217bn b at the end of 2016, with a share of 81.5 per cent of total world crude oil reserves. In 2016, proven natural gas reserves increased by 0.4 per cent at approximately 200.5 trillion standard cu m. This increase in natural gas reserves came on the back of new discoveries in the Middle East and Africa, almost solely relating to OPEC Members.World refinery capacity expanded by 0.45m b/cd to stand at 97.37m b/cd at the end of 2016, mainly supported by additions in North America and the Middle East, as well as Asia and Pacific regions. In the Middle East, expansions came from OPEC Members, while the United States, China and South Korea accounted for additions in North America and Asia and Pacific. 2016 refinery capacity in the OECD grew for the second consecutive year, mainly due to gains in the United States. Global refinery throughput ramped up by 1.7 per cent to reach 81.94m b/d in 2016 with largest gains in the Asia and Pacific and the Middle East. In the Middle East, the gains in refinery throughput originated in OPEC Member Countries. India, China and South Korea dominated the gains in the Asia and Pacific region.The OPEC Reference Basket averaged at $40.76/b in 2016, down from $49.49/b in 2015 and reaching the lowest yearly average since 2004. The yearly decline valued at $8.73/b or 17.6 per cent as compared to 2015. The 2016 volatility stood at $7.28/b or, equivalently, 17.9 per cent relative to the yearly average. The oil market remained mostly in contango since the 2H2014.

      This indicator is defined as the number of EMAS-registered organisations and sites. The Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is a voluntary environmental management system implemented by companies and other organisations from all sectors of economic activity including local authorities, to evaluate, report on and improve their environmental performance. The scheme integrates ISO 14001 (International Standard for Environmental Management System) as its environmental management system element. Since April 2001, corporate registrations are possible, wherein organisations gather all their sites under one registration number. The European Commission started to collect numbers of sites in addition to number of organisations in March 2004 to give a more accurate picture of EMAS development.

Primary production takes place when the natural sources are exploited, for example in coal mines, crude oil fields, hydro power plants or fabrication of biofuels.       The OECD indicators of regulation in energy, transport and communications (ETCR) summarise regulatory provisions in seven sectors: telecoms, electricity, gas, post, rail, air passenger transport, and road freight. The ETCR indicators have been estimated in a long-time series and are therefore well suited for time-series analysis. The ETCR time series was updated, revised and now cover 34 OECD countries and a set of non-OECD countries for 2013. Users of the data must be aware that they may no longer fully reflect the current situation in fast reforming countries. Not all data are available for all countries for all years.

      This dataset covers the indicator for monitoring progress towards renewable energy targets of the Europe 2020 strategy implemented by Directive 2009/28/EC on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources. Supply, use and input-output tables are part of the National Accounts transmission program. The timeliness for supply, use and input-output tables is set to 36 months after the end of the reference year. For example, data for the year 2011 should be transmitted to Eurostat not later than by end of December 2014. The transmission program sets the requirements for the transmission of national data by Member States and partners countries. Every year countries transmit the supply and use tables. Every 5 years (for reference years ending with 0 or 5) countries transmit input-output tables (product by product) and detailed use tables at basic prices and valuation tables. Data are presented in million Euro in current prices (basic prices and a transformation into purchaser's prices for the supply side). The geographic coverage is the Member States of EU. Regulation (EU) No 549/2013 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 21 May 2013 on the European system of national and regional accounts in the European Union defines the requirements for Member States. The EU and EA consolidated Supply, use and input-output tables describe by product and industry the production processes and the transactions in products of the European Union economy with great detail. The consolidated supply, use and input-output tables for the EU describe the aggregation of the EU Member States data, from which the intra trade data has been treated (respectively for the Euro Area).       The “Sustainable Energy for all (SE4ALL)” initiative, launched in 2010 by the UN Secretary General, established three global objectives to be accomplished by 2030: to ensure universal access to modern energy services, to double the global rate of improvement in global energy efficiency, and to double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix. SE4ALL database supports this initiative and provides country level historical data for access to electricity and non-solid fuel; share of renewable energy in total final energy consumption by technology; and energy intensity rate of improvement.

      The Energy Statistics Database contains basic statistics for more than 215 countries/territories. Currently, the database provides time series for the period 1950-2009 and is updated annually during the period October-November.The Energy Statistics Database provides statistics on production, trade, transformation and consumption (end-use) for primary and secondary, conventional, non-conventional and new and renewable sources of energy, as well as population estimates to enable the calculation of per capita indicators. The database contains data in their original units (e.g. metric tonnes, GWh) and also calorific values to allow interfuel comparison in a common energy unit (terajoules). The main source of information for the Energy Statistics Database is the UNSD Annual Questionnaire on Energy Statistics. Additional sources of information for the database include national, regional and international statistical publications (including, but not limited to publications from: the International Energy Agency (OECD/IEA), the Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the Organización Latinoamericana de Energía (OLADE), etc.). The Statistics Division prepares estimates where official data are incomplete or inconsistent.

      The World Energy Council’s Energy Trilemma Index tool, produced in partnership with Oliver Wyman, ranks countries on their ability to provide sustainable energy through 3 dimensions: Energy security, Energy equity (accessibility and affordability), Environmental sustainability. The ranking measures overall performance in achieving a sustainable mix of policies and the balance score highlights how well a country manages the trade-offs of the Trilemma with "A" being the best.
