Accommodation is the number one expense for both business and leisure travelers, topping the price of transport by 25% and dining by 40%. In the last 10 years the hospitality industry has evolved significantly, and an increasing number of travelers are now favoring the unique experience and personal charm of staying in shared accommodation* over traditional hotels. Additionally, millennials are taking a greater share of the market, helping hostels grow at a faster pace than the hotel industry. GoEuro has undertaken an impartial price index study of 150 cities** and over 60,000 properties to analyze the price effect on the industry and how this affects travelers. Since the traveler is the primary user of the Index, local purchasing power has not been factored into the calculations*** in order to reflect real world prices. (This is not a comparison of different types of accommodation, but is instead a price ranking of the cities listed.)****Note:* The Airbnb price (Airbnb is a website for people to list, find, and rent lodging) should not be compared to hotel prices within the same city, as the factors used only reflect a segment of the available offerings. To calculate the Airbnb price the median cost of booking an entire property for 2 and 4 people was averaged over a range from June 1 - December 31, 2014 to include high and low season periods. Data was collected directly from the Airbnb website for over 40,000 properties across 150 cities.** Cities were chosen based on several factors. For cities outside of Europe, they were selected based on population, size of hospitality industry, and number and availability of 1-4 star hotels. Additionally, for cities within Europe, the volume of inbound transport bookings on GoEuro was factored in over the past 12 months.*** GoEuro's formula is based on the average cost of a hotel room, a hostel bed and an Airbnb property in each city. All prices were converted from local currency to Dollars using the Bloomberg exchange on Monday, November 17, 2014.To calculate the hotel room price the median prices for 1, 2, 3 and 4 star hotels were averaged in each city for a stay in over a range from June 1 - December 31, 2014 to include high and low season periods. Prices for 1, 2 and 4 people were also factored in, then the total was divided in order to get the price shown. In total, data for over 16,000 properties across 150 cities was collected directly from hotels and several online aggregators.To calculate the hostel price the median rate of a single bed in a shared dorm was averaged in each city over a range from June 1 - December 31, 2014 to include high and low season periods. Data was collected directly from hostels and several online aggregators for over 3,000 properties across 150 cities.The price of a 5 star hotel was calculated separately to the price of a 1-4 star hotel, as the price range at the most expensive resorts are not always representative of the prices of a city as whole, and can vary dramatically based on season and availability. The same dates and factors as the 1-4 star hotels were used when calculating the average price. It was found that the more 5 star hotels a city has, the more affordable they become relative to the price of a 4 star hotel. eg. Dubai vs Punta Cana.**** Data for Airbnb properties is not included in overall ranking because it is based on a different methodology, and therefore not directly comparable with GoEuro hotel data.

The GoEuro Price Index series focus primarily on common expenditures for travellers, aiming to help people better gauge the difference in prices between places around the world. Research for the 2015 Beer Price Index combines data from 75 cities around the world, including the 5 most commonly imported beers as well as the main local beer. The results show a large difference in the price across continents and between countries. Note:- The price of a beer bottle in a supermarket was calculated as the average cost of a 33cl bottle of several worldwide brands and a major local brand in a regular discount store. All prices were converted to USD using the Bloomberg exchange on June 12th 2015.- The price of a beer in a bar was calculated using the average price of local and imported 33cl draught beer in several major hotel chains worldwide.- Data for the average annual consumption per capita is from the World Health Organization.- Average annual spend per capita is calculated based on the World Health Organization and GoEuro Beer Price Index.- Where beers are sold in 12oz (35.5cl) varieties vs the European standard of 33cl prices were normalised to be equivalent to a 33cl bottle. Formula is: Normalised beer price = Average beer price in store * (33/35.5).- For Abu Dhabi non-alcoholic beers were included.

In spite of the fact that "fans will love and support their team at home or abroad no matter the price" it is valuable to understand what the real monetary-value is that fans are getting for their buck in a league vs league comparison. With this in mind, GoEuro teamed up with the experts at Onefootball (soccer app) to compile and calculate the costs of attending a top division game in 25 countries, and included factors like bus, train, and air transport to an away game as well as accommodation, food, and beverages during the matches. In a separate calculation the leagues are ranked based on quality of the soccer played by their teams on the basis of several world rankings including UEFA, FIFA, and third party databases. Finally, each league's ranking is weighted against the average cost of a first league ticket.All costs were converted to USD on the 9th September 2015 using the Bloomberg exchange.Average ticket price was calculated using an average of first division game tickets for multiple stadiums and seat types across a standard soccer season.While indicator "Average cost of travelling for an away game" did not factor on the value ranking, it was calculated for informational purposes, specifically for travelling soccer fans. The away game cost is intended to represent the actual cost of attending an away game in each league's country. Factors included transport costs (using data from the GoEuro Transport Price Index), one night's accommodation costs (using data from the GoEuro Accommodation Price Index), and food and beer costs (using data from The Economist's Big Mac Index and the GoEuro Beer Price Index)."Value score" field is used to determine where you get the best value soccer for the money you're spending to see a game. The score is the result of a calculation combining average game costs and the league ranking. Teams with a better league ranking or a lower cost of a ticket will have more value. Formula = 10000/(TicketPrice*(3+LeagueRanking)^2).

The Transportation Price Index is based on train, bus and flight information for 51 countries across 5 continents. Various modes of transport were reviewed to rank buses, flights, and trains in each country. Factors such as distance, schedules, and taxes were used among all transport options. Countries were graded based on the most commonly traveled routes both regionally and inter city by kilometer. Countries were only graded on the modes of transport available within that country. Prices can vary greatly depending on mode of transport and location. It is taken an in depth look into the price of various transport options around the world in order for the ultimate price index to be compiled. Train prices can vary greatly depending on the type of train and the distance of the ride, we accounted for train speed, regional vs long distance, and different class services. All formulas have a per Kilometer average. Bus prices are based on taxes, cost per Kilometer (comparing several companies offering city to city service) and the costs of gasoline/Diesel vs other combustibles including renewables. Concerning flight price index, the cheapest regular flights between the most populous cities in each country were found and then the average price per 100km was calculated. Note: As investment in infrastructure and quality of service are defining factors in the cost of transportation, it is important to note that countries with higher costs are very likely to be the ones with better service. Numbers in the index have not been weighted against GDP per capita or PPP of the countries involved, therefore these results do not reflect wages, infrastructure or quality in the transport industry.

Information about the cost of getting to and from the airport, train or bus station to a hotel is valuable, especially when on a budget. As disruptive technologies like Uber (online app that connects riders to drivers) and ride sharing become more common, travelers have more options than ever before. The Urban Transit Price Index consists of price of public transportation, taxis, and Uber based on a single journey, including factors such as distance and time, among others, in 60 cities across the world. All monetary conversions were done on the same day using Bloomberg exchange rates. Real prices were used instead of Purchasing power parity (PPP) as this Price index is intended for travelers not as a macroeconomic tool. All data was gathered from official provider sites. The taxi data was calculated based on the cost of a 10 km ride; for Uber the cost of all available services in the city for an equivalent journey was averaged and for public transport the price of a standard single ticket was taken.
