Aliance for Biking & Walking

The Alliance for Biking & Walking creates, strengthens, and unites state and local bicycling and walking advocacy organizations. We give advocates tools to win campaigns that transform communities into great places to bike and walk. Our network is strong and broad: we are a coalition of over 200 groups throughout North America. Today, more and more North Americans want to live, work, and play in neighborhoods where it's easy and safe to walk and bike. But strong communities with safe biking and walking options don't build themselves – they are the direct result of concerted efforts to improve streetscapes for people. The Alliance supports the people who make that change happen. We provide essential resources, coaching, campaign support, and funding to thousands of leaders at state and local advocacy organizations. This work translates into victories that add up to create bicycle friendly and walk friendly communities: safe walking routes around schools, innovative bicycle infrastructure like protected bike lanes, multi-use paths, and greater funding for walking and bicycling improvements.

In conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Healthy Community Design Initiative, the Alliance publishes the biennial Benchmarking Report to collect and analyze data on bicycling and walking in all 50 states, the 52 largest U.S. cities, and a select number of midsized cities. The Report combines original research with over 20 government data sources to compile data on bicycling and walking levels and demographics, safety, funding, policies, infrastructure, education, public health indicators, and economic impacts. It's an essential go-to resource for public officials, advocates, decision makers, and researchers.
